TRAKAI
The legend
Most of the investigators of Trakai history derive the name of the town from the word "trakas", that means a clearing in the forest. The chronicles of Lithuania announce: "...once the great duke Gediminas left his capital Kernave for hunting five mile somewhere behind the Neris and found a very nice hill in the wood, surrounded by the oaks and plains. He enjoyed the place greatly and settled there and founded a town which was given Trakai name. He moved his capital from Kernave to Trakai. Now this place is called The Old Trakai. |
